La Crescenta Store Standoff Ends

LA CRESCENTA (CNS) - An armed man who robbed one store before holing up in another in a shopping center in the unincorporated La Crescenta-Montrose area tonight was found dead by a sheriff's SWAT team at the end of a standoff that lasted more than five hours, authorities said.

The suspect had barricaded himself around 4 p.m. at the Connect Wireless store at the Marketplace Shopping Center in the 2600 block of Foothill Boulevard between Raymond and Rosemont avenues, according to the sheriff's department.

No shots were fired by sheriff's personnel, authorities said.

The man was armed with two guns and a knife, according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

He robbed drugs from a nearby Rite-Aid pharmacy before running into the phone store, witnesses said.

He was not holding hostages, a sheriff's spokeswoman says.

Members of the suspect's family were brought in to help sheriff's crisis negotiators convince him to give himself up.
