LA Approves $1.5M In Officer's Racism Suit

The Los Angeles City Council has signed off on a $1.5 million payment to a black officer who sued the city and police over race-based harassment.

The Los Angeles Times reports Saturday that the city will pay $300,000 in attorney's fees and other expenses to Officer Earl Wright in addition to the $1.2 million a jury awarded him in March.

Wright, a 23-year veteran on the force, said the department didn't take complaints seriously that dated back to 2009, which caused him to be hospitalized and miss seven months of work because of stress and anxiety.

Wright described repeated bigoted incidents that included a racial slur in a text message from a supervisor and an anniversary cake with a slice of watermelon and piece of fried chicken on it.
