Beverly Hills Surgery Center Loses Accreditation

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) - A Beverly Hills surgery center affiliated with the company that promoted Lap-Band weight loss surgery has lost its accreditation.

A spokesman for Joint Commission, a nonprofit that certifies health care organizations in the U.S., said New Life Surgery Center lost its accreditation effective Aug. 7.

Bret Coons declined to tell the Los Angeles Times why accreditation was revoked.

The move prohibits the center from performing many surgeries. However, the clinic remained open this week.

An attorney for New Life said the surgery center disagrees with the decision and is evaluating its options.

The Times reports five patients have died after Lap-Band weight-loss surgeries at clinics affiliated with the 1-800-GET-THIN ad campaign.

Three of those surgeries were performed at the clinic, which has used several names.
